Bessemer City and Township Fire Authority

The City and Township have continued their discussion into creating a shared Fire Authority. Constraints with membership, budgeting, equipment replacement, and ability to respond to emergencies have all contributed to this potential decision.

We are not alone in this way of thinking. Other communities in Michigan have begun taking steps into creating a combined authority in order to share funding, increase membership, and centralize operations. Examples include the West Michigan Fire Authority between Hart and Pentwater Fire Departments, Calumet-Laurium Fire Authority between Calumet Township, Calumet Village, and Laurium Village, as well as the Michigamme-Spur Volunteer Fire Department.

Fire Departments all over are facing declining membership, increased costs for aging equipment and gear, and outdated stations that were built for an earlier time.

While we are still discussing this, we want to inform the community of opportunities to find out more about the current departments and what changes would happen if combined.
