Members of the Gogebic County Chapter of the Michigan Townships Association met on May 30 for a brief meeting in which no action was taken. Newly elected president Larry Grimsby had hoped to launch a new education program but was unable to attend due to illness.
“This was going to be my kick-off for the ‘Building Better Government,’” said Grimsby by phone on June 2.
He added that he will deliver that presentation at the next mid-summer meeting instead.
One of Grimsby’s interests is in the proper training of township officials. He said he already had sent out related training materials to each board to see who may be interested in pursuing further learning.
Vice-President Jeffery Randall took his place at the May 30 meeting but explained in a Tuesday phone call that the session consisted only of some reports.
Grimsby and Randall also are the supervisors of Erwin and Bessemer townships, respectively. Members of the county’s MTA have kept the nature of their organization highly social, with an annual picnic in the summer and a Christmas party in December, although those events had been hampered by the COVID-19 pandemic in recent years.
Regarding a potential annual picnic this year, Randall said, “We’re going to poll the people to see what they want to do.” Although the picnic generally takes place in warmer months, he said that members might opt for a fall event this year.
Association members meet every other month and include other county officials in their shared roundup of reports.
